CoTrain:  Shared Apprentice Scheme

Nevile & LaurenMatt McAllister

CoTrain is a collaborative scheme that shares commitment for industry training amongst its partner contractors across the region .

CoTrain takes care of all employment responsibilities for apprentices, helps contractors to provide quality placements and delivers an injection of energy from talented young people when workload peaks.

The industry is facing all-round skills shortages and needs new recruits to replace those who retire or leave the industry. But when workload is mostly comprised of short-term projects, it makes it really difficult for companies to commit to long-term training and the sector is losing part-qualified young people as employers struggle to support apprentices long-term.

If you need to fulfill local training obligations but cannot afford to take on a ‘whole' apprentice, then CoTrain offers the flexibility to share this commitment between a number of contractors over the duration of their course.

This collaborative venture operates on a not-for-profit basis, across the construction sector in W.Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire & the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. CoTrain forms part of an emerging national network of shared apprenticeship programme that is part-funded by CITB.
