What is BIM?

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is construction in the age of technology – simply the exchange of information using devices and platforms that we take for granted in other aspects of work.  How often do we send a letter in the post or use the fax these days, and when did you last leave home without your mobile?

BIM is the future of construction

BIM is “An integrated digital process providing coordinated, reliable information about a project throughout all phases, from design through construction and into operation”  BIM Academy at Northumbria University.

What’s different?

The biggest change and challenge will be to the dynamics and behaviours of the supply chain unlocking new, more efficient and collaborative ways of working.  In a nutshell we need to build confidence in sharing information.

Why BIM

The Government drivers are clear, and you can pick these up on the BIM Task Group website.

The long and the short of it – we all want more for less!

The Government has identified BIM as the means to deliver more sustainable buildings, more quickly and more efficiently”

How do you implement BIM?

You need to treat BIM as a business change programme, with strategic board level commitment and a clear implementation plan. You don’t need to do everything, all at once – break the transition down into to achievable steps and upskill pockets of competency.

Identify where your company is now ............

How much will it cost?

The cost of BIM implementation is proportional to what outcomes you want to achieve and where you sit in the supply chain.  The inconvenient truth is that you are likely to need to invest in new digital tools, however the cost of this will depend on what you need to do with the model; data creation or management. Most design review tools are free and it maybe that excel is the most sophisticated tool you are required to work in.  The principal cost on all sides will be in staff time.

What’s in it for me?

  • If you invest your time now, then you will gain a competitive advantage

  • Your business will become more efficient

  • You will be able to continue to work for public sector clients

  • You will be well placed to win new work for public sector clients

When?

  1. Start the journey NOW.
  2. Consider the cost to your business if you don’t start planning now – a project for delivery in 2016 is already active today.…….and

Don’t get hung up on the technology!
